As well as the sandbanks exposed at low tide,  ripples indicate the shallower areas of water, with small rocks awash. Similar hazards continue both up and down river for 3-4 miles beyond the stretch  covered by this photograph. NB. This was taken one hour after low tide. At low tide there is even less water....
